Town of Union, New Jersey. $20 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 652. First NB. Charter #9544. PMG Very Fine 20. Representative of this bank's first title which was used between 1909 and 1925. The location imprint on this evenly circulated $20 Plain Back proudly proclaims "TOWN OF UNION" rather than Union City which accounts for the lion's share of the 80 recorded survivors recorded on this bank by the National Bank Note Census. Yet what's particularly interesting about this piece though is that's one of the last to be issued with this specific imprint. The "TOWN OF UNION" imprint was discontinued in 1925 just when the bank/bank serial number format was introduced making this a rare transitional issue that has yet to be recorded as the rest of the pieces recorded for this imprint represent the bank/Treasury serial numbering format.
