The History and Production • Origins: The company began as a children's books and postcard publisher, then expanded into wooden toy production in 1943 (Tomte Småvareindustri). • The plastic revolution: From the early 1950s, Lærdal pioneered the use of vinyl and soft rubber, creating the famous realistic dolls and selling over 100 million toy car models worldwide (marketed abroad also as Mini-Cars by Creative Playthings). • Vehicle characteristics: The iconic toy cars (often 1/43 scale or in larger series such as 1/24) were loved for their flexibility and were described as "furniture friendly" (delicate on home furniture). Brands reproduced include Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Opel, Land Rover, and Studebaker. Vinyl Line, on the other hand, was a West German company very active in the 1970s, which drew inspiration from Tomte Laerdal.
