The Paper has some minor foxing and minor soiling. Original prints from this series are particularly sought after due to their high quality paper and printing. The print is embellished with embossing. About the print Ejiri was the eighteenth station on the Tōkaidō, the harbour town at the foot of the Miho peninsula that is now part of Shimizu in Shizuoka. Both Hokusai and Hiroshige built famous designs around it, and Tokuriki takes up the same vantage point with a deliberately modern eye: instead of travellers on a windswept causeway, a small black-hulled coastal steamer lies at anchor, its funnel and rigging cutting across the water, while a freshly lettered signboard on the quay advertises the ferry to the bathing beach at Miho — 三保海水浴場行 — beside a wooden timetable frame. Behind all of it, Fuji sits low and blue above a band of violet cloud, deliberately small, the fixed point against which the harbour's bustle registers as passing. It is one of the more quietly clever designs in the series: the mountain is reduced almost to a signboard of its own, while the human foreground belongs entirely to the 1930s. Fuji Sanjūrokkei is generally regarded as Tokuriki's finest commercial series, cut and printed for Uchida by professional Kyoto craftsmen and marketed heavily to foreign collectors. The early impressions are notable for their clean flat colour fields, crisp keyblock and soft graded skies — all present here. About the artist Tokuriki Tomikichirō came from an old Kyoto family of artists and became one of the leading printmakers of twentieth-century Kyoto, active across both the self-carved sōsaku-hanga movement and publisher-led shin-hanga production. He worked until his death in 1999 at ninety-seven, and taught a generation of younger printmakers, including Western students. His Fuji series remains his most sought-after achievement among collectors.
