Thoroton (Robert, Doctor of Physick (sic)), The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire, Extracted Out of Records, Original Evidences, Leiger (sic) Books, other Manuscripts, and Authentick (sic) Authorities. Beautified with Maps, Prospects, and Portaictures (sic), later embellished with with a rare MS ALS from the author, first edition, London: Printed by Robert White, for Henry Mortlock, at the Sign of the Phœnix in St. Paul's Church-yard, and at the White-Hart in Westminster-Hall, 1677, double-column, some Gothic Black Letter, black-ruled and rubricated title, collating: [xiv], 507, 8 (The Index of Arms), [36]pp (indexes), two-page county map, 4 prospects of Nottingham (two printed on one sheet; one trimmed), 11 two-page plates (inclusive of Nottingham bird's eye-view/plan; Newark Church cut down and repaired), 3 full-page plates, and a further 48 illustrations within the text throughout, extra-illustrated with 7 of the Bucks' plates: Newark Castle, Newstead Abbey, Worksop Priory, Nottingham Park & Castle, and Thurgaton Priory, all, but for the latter, dated 1726 within the plate, tipped-in on later blank leaves bound-in, the leaf with the Pierreponts of Holme Pierrepont & Thoresby extensively annotated in manuscript by the hand of an 18th c reader with later unions, offspring, and genealogical notices, finely bound in Regency russia, elaborately blocked, tooled and ruled in gilt and blind with arabesques, quatrefoils, bosses and leafy foliage, rebacked in in-keeping tan morocco gilt, lettered and dated in gilt, the corners expertly repaired, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, ffep inscribed in an early 19th c hand, presumably the commissioner of the binding: This is a very fine and large copy of the work [...], below which is a very rare, and presumably unpublished 1pp letter from Thoroton himself, signed and dated: Carcolston (sic)/Dec. 15. 1674, retaining the integral front addressed: To my very worthy/friend Sam Taylor Esq/at Chesterfield [Derbyshire]/present this, the epistle containing medical advice, including purging 'though y. weather be very good,' and a medicine receipt/recipe for Taylor's ailing wife, who is also advised to pray for a gentle winter, the front repaired with archive strips, and retaining traces of red wax yet no further postal history, folio (35.2 x 23.4cm), [Wing T1063]
