“There are places we do not remember ever having known, and yet something, as we gaze upon them, recognises us.” This work was born as a suspended vision between ritual, dream, and a profoundly archaic dimension. A long table emerges from the absolute density of the black background, occupied by a central skeletal presence and four enigmatic figures, stretched beyond any natural proportion. Their faces, deformed and almost lacking a true human fisionomia, do not seem to belong to a precise era. They remain still, gathered around the table, while their gaze converges toward the observer. At the center of the banquet lies a large skeletal carcass, treated through a harsh and physical painterly matter. Titanium white, deep black, and patches of dark gray build a nearly monochrome scene, in which the light does not seem to originate from a single point but rises directly from the material itself. The surface has been built through dense spatula strokes, accumulations, drips, and material contrasts. The garments of the figures dissolve into the background and continually resurface, creating an unstable perception between body, fabric, and shadow. The painting deliberately preserves a raw, gestural component: the matter not only represents the scene but becomes part of its very tension. The work moves within a liminal zone between the recognizable and the inexplicable. The table belongs to a very ancient human gesture — to gather, share food, occupy a place — but what happens there seems to belong to a completely different order. The figures do not take on a defined identity, and precisely this absence makes their relation to the viewer even more perturbing. The visual language fuses material expressiveness with a visionary and surreal dimension, constructing a deliberately timeless image. Influences from fantastic painting and surrealism are absorbed and transformed into a personal exploration made of deformation, darkness, and matter. Symbolism • The table represents a space of encounter, but also a threshold. It is the place where the human being reunites and recognises their own place within a shared order. Here, however, that order appears altered. • The carcass at the center constitutes the most explicit core of mortality: what remains of the body when the presence that inhabited it has vanished. It is also a primordial relic, placed at the center of a ritual that we cannot fully comprehend. • The four figures embody a more ambiguous dimension. They are not simply monstrous creatures: they represent presences, forms of consciousness, possibilities of humanity pushed beyond its own limit. Their disproportionate bodies and nearly unreadable faces dissolve the distinction between individual and apparition. • Their gaze introduces the most important element of the work: the spectator is not entirely outside the scene. The sense of being watched gradually transforms the viewer from mere observer to possible participant. The table already seems to belong to a ritual begun elsewhere, according to rules that have not been explained to us. • In this sense the work speaks of the most archaic part of consciousness: that which recognises something even before it can understand it. Fear does not necessarily arise from what is shown, but from the sense that what we observe possesses a memory of our presence. • The scene remains deliberately open. It does not offer a definitive explanation but leaves the viewer with the task of deciding whether what they are observing is a memory, a vision, a ritual, or something that belongs to an even deeper and more indecipherable dimension. Artist Biography Simone Pappalardo, professionally known as “TheArtOfAGhost,” is an Italian contemporary artist whose research focuses on exploring human emotions, identity, and the deepest zones of the psyche through a dark, symbolic, and material visual language. His practice stems from the encounter between neo-expressionism, symbolism, dark art, and visionary painting, with particular attention to painting material and the tension between light and darkness. Deformed bodies, enigmatic figures, anatomies, presences, and recurring symbols become tools through which the artist investigates what remains hidden beneath the surface of human experience. His work is characterized by a strongly instinctive approach to painting, in which spatulates, material accumulations, abrasions, and drips participate in the psychological construction of the image. The work is not conceived solely as representation, but as a mental space in which the viewer is called to confront their own interpretation.
