The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (UK) –...

A particularly attractive 1971 UK MGM Select pressing of The Velvet Underground's legendary third album, and a distinctly interesting edition because it features the celebrated Lou Reed "Closet Mix." The original 1969 UK issue employed the cleaner and more evenly balanced mix prepared by MGM engineer Val Valentin. When the album was reissued in Britain in 1971 under the MGM Select imprint, Lou Reed's markedly different mix was used instead, making this the first UK issue to feature Reed's version. Reed's approach places his vocals much further forward whilst pushing parts of the instrumentation deeper into the background. Sterling Morrison famously described its intimate, enclosed sound as the "Closet Mix" — a characterisation that perfectly captures the mix's distinctive aesthetic. Even more significantly, "Some Kinda Love" is not simply remixed; it is an entirely different performance and take from the one heard on the Val Valentin version, adding another layer of collectibility to this pressing. ⸻ Sleeve (VG+): A very nice original example showing some lamination bubbling along the left-hand side together with slight corner wear and normal age-related handling, but nothing particularly serious. The rear remains clean and attractive. Includes the original inner sleeve. Overall a solid VG+ sleeve → VG+ Vinyl (EX): A particularly fine copy. Side 1 is extremely clean with excellent original gloss. Side 2 shows a little more evidence of previous play but remains very attractive overall. The vinyl is confidently graded EX and presents as a genuinely strong playing copy → EX ⸻ Details * 1971 UK MGM Select pressing * Catalogue number 2353 022 * Lou Reed "Closet Mix" * Alternate take of "Some Kinda Love" * Sunbury Music Ltd. publishing credits on the labels * Sleeve printed by MacNeill Press Ltd. * Original inner sleeve included
