The Scent of Roses in the Dunes - Gary Westall

The Scent of Roses in the Dunes by Gary Westall Painting 9.5 x 11.8 :: This painting was created on location in the dunes of Houstrup on Denmark’s west coast. It was painted outdoors to directly capture the special atmosphere and the changing light of the landscape. The focal point is a narrow path winding through the dune landscape. The light-colored sandy areas and paths contrast with the dark densely vegetated dunes and the small pink blossoms of the rose bushes. What made a particularly strong impression on me while painting was the intense sweet scent of the roses that hung over the dunes in the warm summer air. The painting therefore combines the visual memory of the place with a very personal sensory experience.
