The Rogatchover Gaon’s Glosses on the Diwan of Rabbi Judah Halevi!

Diwan – The poetic works of Rabbi Judah Halevi, first published with an introduction and notes by the renowned scholar Samuel David Luzzatto. Mekitzei Nirdamim Press, Lyck, 1864. The towering Gaon Rabbi Yosef Rosen of Rogatchov (1858–1936) was one of the greatest Torah scholars of his generation and of all time, renowned for his prodigious intellect and extraordinary genius. He was born in 1858 in the city of Rogatchov to Rabbi Ephraim Fishel, a Chabad-Lubavitch Chassid. While still a young child, he received a blessing from the Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek, who blessed him with exceptional lomdus, analytical prowess in Torah study. He was a distinguished disciple of the great Lithuanian Torah luminaries, Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, the Beit HaLevi, and Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin, the Mahari”l Diskin. His father sent him to study with the Beit HaLevi in Slutsk, where he also studied alongside the latter’s son, Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik of Brisk. He subsequently studied under the Mahari”l Diskin in Shklov. In 1889, he was appointed rabbi of the Chassidic community in Dvinsk by Rebbi Shlomo Zalman of Kopust, serving alongside Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, author of Or Sameach, who led the Lithuanian community. The Rogatchover was a towering genius among the Torah giants of his era, distinguished by an almost unparalleled mastery of the entire Torah, encompassing its general principles, specific laws, and their minutest details. His approach to Torah study was extraordinary: he regarded the entire Torah as one unified whole, demonstrating the intricate connections between its seemingly disparate subjects. He responded to thousands of halachic inquiries and was renowned for his extraordinary diligence and unwavering devotion to Torah study. His celebrated works include Tzafnat Paneach, his responsa and commentary on the Torah. His writings are replete with numerous cross-references connecting virtually every area of Torah literature, and a dedicated institute was established to decipher and elucidate them. Particularly renowned are his commentaries on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah. [4], 6, 42 Leaves. 21.4 cm. book
