Tutte le aste / Arte, Pittura e Arti Grafiche / “The Hunger of Madrid in 1808”, Attributed to José Aparicio Inglada

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 112 x 146 cm. This monumental composition depicts one of the most dramatic episodes of the Spanish Peninsular War, during Napoleon’s siege of Madrid. In the center, an old man holds a fainted woman while another body lies inert, surrounded by figures expressing despair and misery. Theatrical lighting and rigorous drawing give the scene a heroic and moral dimension. José Aparicio Inglada, history painter and disciple of David, achieves a work of great narrative force, where compositional classicism combines with patriotic and humanitarian sentiment. The workmanship is polished, with intense and balanced chromaticism, which accentuates the contrast between the nobility of suffering and the brutality of the war context. This canvas, of academic ambition and patriotic message, is part of 19th-century Spanish historicism and constitutes a visual testimony to the exaltation of perseverance and faith in times of adversity. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
