Large Ammonite Assemblage – Polished Thanatocenosis – Cretaceous, Madagascar A spectacular Cretaceous ammonite assemblage preserving numerous ammonites of different sizes together within a single natural matrix. The specimen forms a dense and highly sculptural composition, with overlapping shells emerging from different levels of the matrix. Several ammonites have been carefully polished, revealing intricate suture patterns, internal mineralization and warm tones ranging from caramel and amber to brown, cream and grey. Particularly attractive are the specimens that retain areas of natural iridescence. Under direct light, some shells display flashes of green, pink, gold and violet, creating a striking contrast with the darker polished ammonites. The assemblage preserves a wide variety of forms and orientations, including large prominent ammonites, smaller partially exposed individuals and more natural sections still embedded in the surrounding matrix. This gives the piece considerable depth and makes it interesting to examine from every side. The preparation has been carried out to emphasize the fossils while retaining the overall structure of the original accumulation. The result is a highly decorative natural composition that combines paleontological interest with strong visual impact. This type of association is often described as a thanatocenosis, representing an accumulation of organisms preserved together within the same depositional context.
