Tea Scene – Japonisme

Félix Hilaire Buhot (1847–1898) Cabinet de lecture au Japon ca. 1873–1875 Original etching on paper by the celebrated French engraver Félix Hilaire Buhot, dedicated to a scene of a Japanese interior. The composition depicts a group of people in traditional clothing gathered in a Japanese setting. On the right there is a panel with oriental characters in which the character 茶, related to tea, is clearly visible. The work constitutes an interesting example of European Japonisme in the second half of the nineteenth century, a period in which numerous French artists were drawn to the charm of Japanese art, culture and iconography. The subject is documented with the title Cabinet de lecture au Japon also in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which houses a copy of the same composition attributed to Félix Buhot and dated about 1873.
