Taylorville, Plowmans Bank. 1860 $3. PMG Very Fine 25 Net. Annotation, Minor Edge Damage & Paper Pulls. No. 1853. Plate B. Contemporary to the Illinois bond troubles of the early 1860s which claimed scores of banks across the state due thanks to the deficiencies of the state's "Free Banking" system. The Plowmans Bank of Taylorville is nonetheless a great example having organized in 1860 before ultimately failing the following year in 1861 leaving behind a numismatic legacy spoken to by not only a superb agricultural title, but also the technical sophistication of the National Bank Note Company during the early 1860s. Here lovely orange protectors and scrollwork contrast nicely against dark cycloidal counters and subsidiary vignettes lending this note a quality sure to please those who collect.
