It is used as a gemstone, just as the pink variety thulite is. As zoisite crystallizes, tanzanite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on the surfaces. The cleavage planes gleam more pearly in comparison. Larimar is a blue-white variegated variety of the pectolite, which has so far been found at only two localities: in a transformed ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and at the “Fittà” near Soave in Italy. Larimar has nothing to do with the blue amber that also occurs on Hispaniola, which is processed in the same facilities in Puerto Plata and in the same manner as pectolite.
