TAHI’I FAN Polynesia, Marquesas Islands 19th century or earlier Wood, palm leaf, coconut fibers, and lime, with a beautiful patina resulting from age and use, including old repairs, signs of wear, and missing sections H. 45 cm Provenance: - Leo and Karin Van Oosterom Collection, The Hague / Amsterdam, acquired in 1969 - Passed down through the family - Sotheby’s Paris Auction, African and Oceanic Art, June 13, 2018, lot no. 10 A rare, complete fan, or tahi’i, featuring a carved handle (ke’e) with two pairs of tiki and a beautifully woven and lime-washed blade. The tiki are arranged in two superimposed registers: the upper register shows the tiki in bust form, back-to-back, with their hands on their stomachs. The lower register consists of two full-length tikis in the so-called “Polynesian” position, standing back-to-back. The handle ends in a half-moon pommel. The handle as a whole shows beautiful signs of wear, indicating long and intensive use and suggesting great age. The blade, which is antique, is remarkably well woven, threaded onto the long handle-mounting shaft, and features a very fine and tight weave.
