TAGO MASK Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Gulf of Huon, Huon Peninsula, Malasiga Village 19th–20th century Rattan, sago palm leaf sheath, feathers, lichen, seeds, human hair, wood, and coconut shell with red, black, and white pigments. The tago spirits, associated with initiation rites, were displayed during ceremonies. The masks appeared cyclically every 10 or 12 years, and during the year dedicated to the tago ceremonies, a period of peace prevailed on the island, with the inhabitants required to postpone all their conflicts until the end of the ceremonies. Once the ceremonial year was over, the masks returned to their place of storage: special houses built in the forest, to which only initiated men had access. A similar mask entered the collections of the Musée de l’Homme in Paris at the end of the 19th century (now the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, No. M.H. 94.14.1), another at the Minnesota Museum of Art, Minneapolis (No. L79.15.187), and a third in the collections of the Museum der Kulturen in Basel (No. VB 27076).
