Tacitus - C. Cornelius Tacitus ex I. Lipsii accuratissima editione - 1634

TACITUS, Cornelius. [Tacito] [Publius Cornelius Tacitus] C. Cornelius Tacitus ex I. Lipsii accuratissima editione Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1634. First edition Thus. Contains all the works of Tacitus according to the definitive edition of Iustus Lipsius. Nice copy. Contemporary hardback boards. Gilt embossed designs to the spine and leather title label. The binding is quite rubbed, with edgewear to the spine edges with some loss of surface. The Design and spine are very faded. Duysent, shows a shield with portraits of Augustus, Livia, and Tiberius. End papers have pencil and ink marking and signatures. The corner of the front end paper has been clipped to remove a signature. Rest of the book is in very good, clean condition. Text in Latin. A nice example of Elsevier typography. [20], 786, [30] pp., with the final blank. 12.5cm x 8cm. 12mo (signatures *¹⁰ A–Ll¹²). Willems 415. Publius Cornelius Tacitus, known as Tacitus (c.AD 56 – c.120), was a Roman historian and politician. Tacitus is widely regarded as one of the greatest Roman historians by modern scholars. This is the complete works of Rome's greatest historian in a book you could carry in a coat pocket. 1629 the Elzevirs of Leiden launched their famous series of small-format Latin classics: Accurate texts, engraved titles, narrow margins and a distinctive typeface cut by Christoffel van Dijck. The text is that of Justus Lipsius, the great Flemish scholar whose edition of Tacitus (first published by Plantin in 1574) set the standard for classical scholarship. The imprint "Lugduni Batavorum" means "Leiden of the Batavians." In his Histories, Tacitus tells the story of the Batavian revolt against Rome, led by Julius Civilis. The Dutch saw the Batavians as their ancestors and the revolt as an early version of their own revolt against Spain.
