Table clock - Empire verguld bronzen pendule “Genius des Guten”

Table clock - Empire verguld bronzen pendule “Genius des Guten”

A particularly elegant and richly executed Empire pendulum clock in gilded bronze, dating from the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820. The sculptural composition is traditionally known as “Genius des Guten” (the Genius of the Good) and is dominated by the graceful figure of Amor, recognizable by his wings. He stands beside the clock and holds a rose in his raised arm. His finely modeled, fluttering drapery gives the scene a lively and especially elegant character. The round clock is supported by a classical column, the front adorned with a striking winged mask. To the right is a richly worked classical vase filled with flowers, creating a beautifully balanced composition. The rectangular pedestal features refined appliques and a central mythological bas-relief with a winged Zeus scattering flowers as he flies. On both sides there are delicate garlands of flowers. The lower edge is finished with a continuous palmette frieze, characteristic of the decorative vocabulary of the Empire period. The combination of finely chiseled gilded bronze, classical architecture, and mythological symbolism makes this pendulum a particularly decorative example of high-quality European bronze art from the early 19th-century Empire. The photos are part of the description. Our objects can also be viewed in Mora Antiques' showroom in Bilzen-Hoeselt, Belgium.
