High Grade Year 4 Peking 10 Taels (t) CHINA--EMPIRE. Board of Revenue. 10 Taels, 1854 (Yr. 4). P-A12b. S/M#H176-13. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Chen prefix, confirming its origin as a "Peking" issue. Vertical format, blue woodblock printing on white paper, various interesting red hand stamps on the reverse. A highly popular large-size Qing note in excellent condition, owing to extant samples often seen with heavy circulation, stains and other defects. This is a choice VF example with bold blue ink and generally clean white paper. Surpassed in grade by just seven other examples. PMG Comments "Spindle Hole at Issue". The Xianfeng 'Cash' and 'Tael' notes were first issued in 1853 during the Taiping Rebellion when tax receipts plummeted, and the treasury was dangerously low on silver. These notes did not have collateral backing them and could not be redeemed for physical silver sycees or coins. Unsurprisingly, they were extremely unpopular and were often refused by merchants. The 'Qing' notes were eventually completely demonetised in 1860, by which time they had become worthless pieces of paper. Estimate: $5,000 - $8,000. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. 高分咸豐四年京師拾兩 咸豐四年戶部官票拾兩。 "辰"字軌，證實為"北京"地名發行。豎式，白紙藍墨木刻版印，背面鈐有多方趣味紅色手工印章。極受青睞之大型清代紙鈔，品相極佳，蓋因現存樣本多見嚴重流通痕跡、有漬及其他瑕疵。此乃精選VF品相珍品，藍墨濃郁，白紙整體潔淨。評級僅次於另外七枚。PMG備註"發行時帶主軸孔"。咸豐"制錢"與"銀兩"鈔票首發於1853年太平天國起義期間，其時稅收銳減，國庫白銀存量告急。這些鈔票並無抵押擔保，且無法兌換為實體的銀錠或錢幣，想當然爾，商人經常拒收，市場使用率極低。最終清廷於咸豐拾年宣佈廢止使用，這些官票寶鈔隨即淪為一張廢紙。
