He descended from the royal family of Surakarta (Solo). Koempoel was a very prolific artist whose work remains highly sought after by collectors of Southeast Asian art and is regularly traded at international art auctions. Koempoel began his artistic journey under the guidance of Dutch artists Gerard Pieter Adolfs and Willem van der Does. He developed a bold, expressive and impressionist touch, frequently making use of the palette knife. He belonged to the later generation of the Mooi Indie movement. His extensive oeuvre consists mainly of vibrant scenes of Indonesian daily life, such as bustling markets, historic cityscapes, landscapes, and modes of transport such as ox carts and rickshaws.
