Exceptional ceremonial body mask Jipae, belonging to the Asmat culture of Western Papua, Indonesia. This type of piece fully covered the wearer’s body and was used during jipae funerary ceremonies to represent the spirit of a deceased person. Measurements: Height: 173 cm Diameter: 56 cm Weight: 3 kg It is made with a cone-shaped structure of basketry and vegetal cordage, decorated with pigments in reddish, white, and black tones. It presents a face of great expressiveness, side arms, and a long skirt of vegetal fibers that added movement and a particularly striking presence during ceremonial dances. In the Asmat tradition, these masks symbolically helped the deceased to leave the community and embark on their journey to the world of the ancestors. The man wearing the suit remained hidden inside and could assume certain responsibilities linked to the represented person, especially the protection of the family and the children left behind.
