Since antiquity, and especially in the rugged mountain regions of Afghanistan, lapis lazuli has been mined and prized for its intense blue colour. Ground lapis produced one of the most expensive pigments, used by painters such as Giotto and Michelangelo to create their incomparable masterpieces, whose blue continues to captivate with its luminosity even after centuries. Gold and lapis lazuli form a classic combination in jewellery, particularly in men’s pieces. This pair clearly demonstrates how the materials enhance each other’s effect. The oval display surfaces consist of lapis cabochons, set within broad frames of finely textured yellow gold. The elongated oval toggles and connecting bars are also made of gold. The pair dates to around 1965. The cufflinks are in excellent condition and represent high-quality, stylish shirt jewellery in a timeless colour scheme.
