Two extraordinary old European cut diamonds weighing a combined total of approximately 8.45 carats form the radiant centerpiece of these striking drop earrings. The large, hand-cut facets of the two main stones capture the light in a way that modern diamonds can scarcely match. Their sparkle appears soft, vibrant, and full of depth. The stones’ slightly tinted colour underscores this warm character, as does their remarkably good clarity. Each of the two impressive center stones is surrounded by a halo of modern-cut brilliant-cut diamonds. Thanks to delicate shadow gaps, the antique diamonds—weighing over four carats—appear to float almost freely in their settings. The smaller diamonds in the pair together weigh an additional 6.50 carats and give the earrings that magnificent radiance one inevitably associates with the grand jewels of the Belle Époque. Delicate bridges extend from the flower-shaped centerpieces to finely crafted loops, behind which the ear studs are concealed. These loops add a touch of lightness to the design and lend the earrings an astonishing air of lightness despite their impressive size. The story behind this pair makes it doubly fascinating: The two large old-cut diamonds, as well as the loops and connecting bars, date from the Belle Époque era c. 1910. Several decades later, they were assembled into the earrings we see today. There is much to suggest that the owner at the time had the sparkling diamond wreaths added to provide an even more prestigious setting for the historic diamonds. Thus, the earrings combine the beauty of the Belle Époque with the elegance of the mid-20th century. With a total diamond weight of nearly 15 carats, these earrings tell the story of precious gemstones that have been preserved, cherished, and then reinterpreted across generations. The pair came to us from a private collection in southern Germany and is accompanied by a detailed appraisal from Vienna.
