A granite stone stele depicting Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩, carved in high relief within a broad almond-shaped mandorla. The bodhisattva is portrayed in the form of a standing monk, his hands clasped together in prayer before the chest. The figure is simply and softly carved, with a calm facial expression and long flowing robes. Faint traces of red pigment create an aureole around his head. The surface is strongly weathered from prolonged outdoor exposure, softening the carved details and giving the stone an attractive aged appearance. Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩, affectionately known as Ojizô-sama お地蔵様, is one of the most familiar figures in Japanese Buddhism. He is widely revered as a protector of children, travellers and the deceased, and stone images of Jizô are commonly found along roadsides, in temple grounds and cemeteries throughout Japan. Period: Japan – Late Edo / Early Meiji period (19th century). Dimensions: Height 31.5 cm, Width 25.5 cm, Depth 12 cm. In good antique condition with a heavily weathered surface consistent with long-term outdoor exposure. There are some small chips along the outer rim. As well as remnants of lichen and moss along the sides and upper edges. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
