Spanish school (XVII), After - San Vicente Ferrer

• The Dominican habit: The figure wears the classic habit of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), consisting of a tunic or scapular white in color, covered by a black cloak and hood. • The index finger pointing upward: This highly recognizable gesture evokes his preaching aspect and his sermons about the final judgment, earning him the epithet the "Angel of the Apocalypse." The gesture solemnly points toward God and toward heaven. • The open book with inscription: He holds a cartouche or an open book in which the Latin phrase clearly reads "TIMETE DEUM" (Fear God). This inscription is part of the biblical passage from the Apocalypse (Revelation 14:7: "Timete Deum, et date illi honorem, quia venit hora judicii eius" / "Fear God and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come"), which was the main motto of his itinerant preaching across Europe. In terms of painting style, the pronounced crackle texture of the surface and the likeness of the face suggest an old devotional painting, possibly from a Spanish or viceregal school, with Baroque influence.
