Historical Context The Patagon, also known as the Albertusdaalder, was one of the principal silver trade coins of the Southern Netherlands during the seventeenth century. Originally introduced under Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella, the Patagon continued to be issued under subsequent Habsburg rulers, including Philip IV of Spain. This particular example was struck at the Brussels mint in 1656, during the reign of Philip IV (1621–1665), when the Southern Netherlands remained under Spanish Habsburg authority. The year 1656 falls within the final years of the Franco-Spanish War (1635–1659), a prolonged conflict between France and Spain that had significant consequences for the political and territorial development of Western Europe. The Southern Netherlands occupied an important strategic and economic position within the Spanish Habsburg monarchy. Cities such as Brussels and Antwerp remained centres of administration, commerce and monetary production. The Patagon circulated throughout the European trading networks and became an important silver denomination in international commerce. Its distinctive designs reflect the political traditions of the Burgundian-Habsburg Netherlands. The crowned Spanish arms emphasise the authority of the Spanish monarchy, while the surrounding collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece represents the dynastic prestige inherited from the medieval Dukes of Burgundy. The Burgundian cross on the reverse was another enduring symbol of Habsburg authority in the Low Countries. 1656/1655 Overstrike An interesting feature of this particular coin is the overstruck date, recorded as 1656/1655. The coin was produced using a die on which the earlier date 1655 had been altered to 1656, with traces of the original date remaining beneath the later numerals. Such overdate varieties provide insight into the practical methods employed by seventeenth-century mints, where existing dies could be modified for continued use rather than replaced entirely. Provenance Ex Schulman b.v., Auction 379, June 2024, Lot 575. Previously offered by the Dutch numismatic auction house Schulman b.v., with attribution to the Brussels mint and the 1656/1655 overdate variety. The auction provenance provides an additional documented chapter in the collecting history of this seventeenth-century silver coin.
