Tutte le aste / Monete & Banconote / Spain. Carlos II. 8 Reales Potosí Shipwreck Consolación

Spanish hammered silver coin commonly called a “macuquina” Origin / Mint: Potosí (Bolivia, under the Spanish colonial Empire), as indicated by the letter P on the left. Face value of the era: 8 Reales (or piece of eight / real de a ocho), visible thanks to the number 8 engraved at the center of the reverse between the columns. * Design: * Obverse: A crowned fleur-de-lis-style cross with castles and lions in the quadrants. * Reverse: The Columns of Hercules surmounted by waves of the sea, with the typical inscription grid (P for Potosí, 8 for the denomination, the assayer’s initial, and the partial date at the bottom). Identity and provenance of the piece Wreck: Santa María de la Consolación (1681). History: This Spanish galleon of the South Armada was carrying a treasure of silver coins struck at Potosí. In 1681, pursued by pirates near Isla Santa Clara (Isla de Muerto, in Ecuador), the captain ran the ship aground on a reef and the crew set it on fire to prevent the pirates from seizing the treasure. Mint & Denomination: 8 Reales (Potosí, Bolivia), struck in silver under the reign of Charles II of Spain. Measured weight: 16.55 g (on your scale). Numismatic note: An 8 reales coin originally weighed ~27 grams. The mass loss (here ~10.5 g) is typical for coins recovered from shipwrecks: seawater corrodes and gradually dissolves silver over the centuries underwater. Consolación coins are sought after by collectors because this shipwreck is directly linked to the history of piracy in the Pacific. Market value estimate: €250 to €450 (about $300–$500 USD). Enhancement factors: - Authenticity certificate included from a recognized house (Atlantic Treasure Coins). - Visible markings: The central grille of the columns, the “8” denomination, and the mint logo “P” are clearly visible. - The history of the Consolación ship and the pirates of 1681 provides significant historical added value.
