We’re talking about the hard, white or other-toned, shiny part. Mother-of-pearl is a semi-precious stone that forms at the pace of nature, so it captures the vibrant colors that nature hides on its exterior. The natural iridescence of mother-of-pearl has captivated people for centuries. Also known as nacre, the gemstone has a long history of use in decorative arts and jewelry. Its delicate tones and its brilliant sheen make it a highly sought-after choice for designers and artisans alike. The history of mother-of-pearl traces back more than 4,000 years. The ancient Egyptians used it in jewelry and carvings, while the Chinese have used it decoratively for centuries. In the 16th century, mother-of-pearl became a highly sought-after material for inlays in furniture. Mother-of-pearl is found in the shells of various mollusks, including abalone, oysters, and clams. Thin nacreous layers form on the interior of the shells to protect the animal’s soft tissue from waste and parasites. These layers reflect light in a unique way, creating the iridescence that makes mother-of-pearl so attractive. For centuries, mother-of-pearl has been associated with various healing properties and metaphysical attributes. Many believe the gemstone has a calming effect on emotions, promoting emotional balance and harmony in daily life. Others associate mother-of-pearl with feminine energy, linking it to the natural cycles of the moon and tides. Some cultures believe it can enhance intuition, helping to better understand situations and make wiser decisions. From a physical standpoint, some also believe mother-of-pearl may help alleviate digestive and skin issues. Its iridescent hue and elegant beauty add an extra layer of appeal to its healing properties. The symbolism of mother-of-pearl is also significant. It can represent motherhood, fertility, and the bond between mother and child. It is also sometimes associated with purity, innocence, and a sense of calm and tranquility.
