Sir Stanley Spencer RA (1891-1959) - A cartoon sketch showing a crouching figure clasping an owl, inscribed: CHARACTER 'Yes of course you must be left absolutely alone so that you can get on' OWL 'Of course what I want to do, is to do my river pictures and all that.' Pencil on letter headed paper Wispinton House, Cookham (the house of Edith Opson), her sister Dorothy Upson who was the original chairman of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, dimensions: 20.3 x 15 cm. Together with five letters from Stanley Spencer dated May 24th 1949 written to Dorothy Upson from Clivedon View, another (undated) from Clivedon View to Edith, another dated January 20th 1950 to Dorothy from Clivedon View, another 4th June 1957 to Edith from Clivedon View together with a copy of the Stanley Spencer Resurrection Pictures (1945-1950) catalogue, Faber Gallery, signed by Spencer and inscribed to Edith Upson: 'an unbirthday present from J.D. Scott' [John Dick Scott] author and civil servant with connection to Spencer. Together with a copy of the Royal Academy publication 'Stanley Spencer RA', 1980. Provenance: direct family descent to the present owner.
