Kitty Garman (1926-2011) was the second daughter of Jacob Epstein and Kathleen Garman. Born out of wedlock, Kitty took her mother’s surname (Epstein’s wife Margaret had famously shot Kathleen out of jealousy some three years earlier, wounding her in the shoulder). Kitty studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, but abandoned her studies after she was introduced to Lucian Freud in 1947, marrying him a year later. Despite their turbulent relationship, Kitty became his most important early model, serving as the subject of 'Girl with a White Dog', 'Girl with a Kitten' and other masterpieces, which are among the most important and valuable of British 20th-century portraits. , Oxford, 1986, p. 200, no. 387 (1), another cast illustrated.
