About TATSUZO SHIMAOKA and his 1982 Exhibition (from a Japanese cultural heritage website): Tatsuzō Shimaoka, b.1919 - d.2007, was a Japanese mingei inspired potter who studied under Shōji Hamada and later became the second Living National Treasure of Mashiko, Japan.[ n 1982, famed Japanese Mingei master potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka held a highly influential solo exhibition at the Seibu Department Store Gallery in Tokyo. He showcased his signature Jōmon zōgan (rope-impressed inlay) technique. This technique involved rolling hand-braided silk cords (made by his father) across wet clay and filling the impressions with contrasting white or colored slip. Seibu Department Stores (specifically the Seibu Ikebukuro and Seibu Utsunomiya branches) served as primary exhibition partners for Shimaoka and his workshop. Seibu routinely hosted his major milestones.
