SHORTY ROBERTSON JANGALA, Ngapa Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming), 2005

SHORTY ROBERTSON JANGALA Warlpiri language, c.1925 - 2014 Ngapa Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming), 2005 acrylic on linen 152 x 76 cm bears inscription verso: Shorty Jangala Robertson, 1192/05, 152x76 cm, Warlukurlangu Artists PROVENANCE Warlukurlangu Artists, Northern Territory, Cat No. 1192/05 Coo-ee Art Gallery, New South Wales, Cat No. 2555 The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Warlukurlangu Artists and Coo-ee Art Shorty Robertson Jangala was a senior Warlpiri artist and an important painter associated with Warlukurlangu Artists at Yuendumu. Born at Jila, a large soakage and claypan northwest of Yuendumu, Robertson grew up travelling extensively through his Country. His paintings are closely connected to Warlpiri Jukurrpa and the places, ancestral narratives and cultural knowledge for which he held responsibility. This painting depicts Puyurru, a site west of Yuendumu where naturally occurring water soakages are found within an otherwise dry creek bed. The work relates to a Rain Jukurrpa associated with two Jangala rainmakers who sang the rain, bringing forth a powerful storm that travelled across Country with lightning striking the land. The storm joined another travelling from Wapurtali to the west. According to the narrative, it was carried further west by a bird until its burden became too great and it was dropped at Purlungyanu, creating a large soakage. At Puyurru, the bird encountered and dug up Wanayarra, an ancestral snake whose movement carried water through Country and created the large body of water known as Jillyiumpa, a place with continuing connections to Robertson's family. Robertson uses a distinctive visual language to evoke these events and the movement of water through the landscape. Straight lines represent ngawarra (floodwaters) and lightning, small circles indicate mulju (water soakages), while the bars connecting the longer lines represent mangkurdu (clouds). Together, these elements map the movement of rain and water across Country and the important sites connected by this Jukurrpa. © SHORTY JANGALA ROBERTSON / Copyright Agency, 2026
