Ship's compass - Brass

A beautiful, authentic, and large maritime dry compass, manufactured by the renowned Dutch instrument maker N.V. Observator Rotterdam. This imposing navigation instrument is in good, working condition and is an impressive centerpiece for collectors of maritime antiques, enthusiasts of nautical history, or as a unique decorative piece in a nautical or industrial interior. Unlike liquid-filled compasses, this is a classic dry compass. The exceptionally light, paper compass rose rests on a fine needle and is tensioned with a fine-mesh network of stay wires (spokes). This system was designed to minimize friction to an absolute minimum. ​Unique shock damping: What makes this specimen extra special and rare is the separate suspension. The inner housing is hung in a gimbal ring by means of four original leather straps/loops. This ingenious construction served as an elastic buffer to absorb the vibrations of the ship's engine and the hard jolts of the waves. ​Specifications: Many photos have been added so that the condition of the compass and case can be assessed well.
