Ship's clock

Schatz Royal Mariner — eight-day nautical watch with guardhouse chimes — West Germany Schatz bulkhead clock Royal Mariner, with a gilt-brass finish case and a hinged glazed lid. The dial features a 24-hour scale, two winding holes, and the inscription "Made in West-Germany." It measures 18 cm in diameter, 10 cm deep, and weighs 1,850 g. Its chimes reproduce the onboard guard schedule: one strike after the first half-hour, increasing by one strike every half-hour, reaching eight strikes at the end of a four-hour watch. Then the count restarts. Hence the expression "Eight bells and all is well," associated with the end of a trouble-free watch. It is the model’s hallmark; the chimes do not simply indicate civil time. Both the movement and the chime mechanism engage, but they run out of sync and require servicing, so it is offered without warranty of operation. The case shows wear, stains, and scratches visible in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is shipped well-packaged and with a tracking number.
