Seconde École de Fontainebleau (c. 1600) - Diane se réjouit sous la Lune

- Oil on panel. Panel keyed into place. Conservatively restored according to the age of the work. - This delicate cabinet piece condenses the refined elegance of Mannerism from the Second School of Fontainebleau, where the mythic-epic figure of Diana abandons the roughness of the hunt to become an embodiment of courtly eroticism. The goddess rests reclining on satin drapery in the foreground, displaying a stylized nude with pearl-like flesh and aristocratic line that responds directly to the sophisticated taste of the court of Henry IV and to the famed iconographic devotion inherited from Diana of Poitiers. Her languid, artificial pose is complemented by a serene face with fine features and a sly gaze, while she lightly holds a small fruit, flanked at her feet by a still life of game and fruit that underscores the voluptuous character of the scene. The setting contrasts the warm light that models the deity’s body with the dense, mysterious shade of the forest that shelters her. In the background on the left, the composition opens to a dusky, greenish-clear area where a secondary figure is glimpsed, adding an enigmatic narrative to the whole, very typical of study paintings intended for private delight and the educated collection. The subtle brushwork, together with the stark contrast between ivory skin and the shadowy foliage, reveals a clear Northern and Italian influence merged into French palatial aesthetics, making this panel a jewel of erudition, sensual grace, and mythological mystery. - Image dimensions without frame: 41.5 x 58 cm / 65 x 73.5 cm with exclusive, custom-made framing of high quality.
