This original sheet is a precious Renaissance page drawn from the 1550 Latin edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia universalis, printed in Basel by the publisher Heinrich Petri, focusing on the territories of the ancient East. The recto of the page, marked with the number 1209, opens with the chapter on Margiana (Chapter LXXXVIII), described as a land surrounded by mountains and sandy deserts where Alexander the Great founded the city of Alexandria of Margiana. The text delves into the region’s archaic customs, recalling how kinsmen used to feed on the bodies of their deceased relatives, and describes the epic military feat of Alexander the Great who, to storm a rock seemingly inaccessible and defended by the rebel Arimazes, chose three hundred young soldiers selected to scale the cliff face at night, forcing the defenders to surrender. The visual composition of the recto is enhanced by an woodcut depicting the bold nighttime ascent of the Macedonian soldiers on the rocky walls, followed by the introduction to the chapter on the Parthians and the Persians (De orientis apud parthos et persas imperio). Turning the page, the verso, numbered 1210, continues the treatment of the regions of Greater Asia (De terris Asiae maioris), examining the military power of the Parthians, their rebellions against the Roman Empire, and their strategic alliances with the Scythians. The lower part houses the chapter on Bactriana (Bactria. Cap. XC), a mountainous and fertile region famed for the production of the precious resin known as bdellium, and introduces the historical and mythical figure of the philosopher-king Zoroaster, renowned for his astronomical studies and for the arts of magic. The sheet finally concludes with the dramatic account of the end of Darius III of Persia, intercepted by Alexander the Great, now dying on his chariot after having been betrayed and mortally wounded by his own satraps Bessus and Nabarzanes, recounting the ancient words of relief uttered by the Persian king before expiring and the arrangements Alexander makes to grant him a solemn royal burial.
