"Media Democracy – Rendezvous with the Truth" by Sebastian Bieniek from 1995 is a visionary and deeply media-critical work of art. The 150 x 120 cm canvas was created when the Berlin artist was only 20 years old and still before his formal art studies. In a visual density that is almost kaleidoscopic and collage-like, Bieniek engages with the mechanisms of power, information, and manipulation. At its core, the work themes the growing alienation in a society dominated by mass media. The artist shows how artificially created narratives and filters are placed like an insurmountable wall between the rulers and the voters. In this structure, according to Bieniek’s concept, there is hardly any genuine, immediate connection between the people and politics left; instead, reality is replaced by a permanent media projection. The resulting cognitive dissonance in the population paradoxically often leads to a demand for even more media coverage—a cycle that ultimately only benefits the media themselves and the powers that be. The citizen remains trapped in this labyrinth, where any critical countervoice is immediately absorbed and integrated into the existing media system. Although painted in the mid-1990s, the painting possesses surprising relevance due to the rise of social media and digital filter bubbles and is today regarded as one of the formative early key works in Sebastian Bieniek’s painterly oeuvre. --- The artist Sebastian Bieniek was born in 1975 in Poland. He studied art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and the UdK Berlin with Marina Abramović, John M. Armleder, and Katharina Sieverding, and between 1998–2000 he was a member of the then-known as the "artistic center of the city" Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin, where he shared a studio with the artist Chiharu Shiota. During that time Bieniek became known for his drastic actions and conceptual art. He later studied film directing and made films. From 2008 he painted again and, by 2013 at the latest, gained world fame through his paintings and photographs with ambivalent statements and depictions. From 2013 his works spread worldwide via viral exposure several times, were shown on television and published in the world’s largest and most important magazines, and achieved not only broad distribution and notoriety but also influence in the music and even fashion scenes. Thus, for example, American musician Pharrell Williams in 2014 in his hit video "Marylin Monroe" repeatedly showcased a work by Bieniek, and even the singer Madonna contacted Bieniek in 2016 (article in Vogue Spain) and asked him to design the cover for her "X-Album." In 2015, French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus finally had his models walk the Paris Fashion Week with a face personally painted by Bieniek on the fashion show, winning the prestigious LVMH Special Jury Prize. In 2015 Sebastian Bieniek was named by The Culture Trip Magazine as one of the "Top 5 Influential Contemporary Berlin-Based Artists." After 2019 Bieniek created mainly social-media- and state-critical conceptual works that were often embedded with humorous and ironic ideas. In this way he remained true to his subversive creed and definition of art and never allowed himself to be absorbed or used.
