Sea Snail Sea shell - S-599 MELO UMBILICATUS (No reserve price)

Beautiful, very large Melo umbilicatus shell, popular names being the heavy belownica or the umbilical melon, is a very large sea snail, a mollusk of the marine snail family Volutidae, vol. The Melo umbilicatus shell belongs to one of the most magnificent and striking ones. It is valued both by collectors and as an ornamental element. Large, massive, egg-shaped–elongated, with a clearly rounded abdomen. The aperture is very wide, spanning almost the entire length of the shell. A distinctive feature is the well-developed, deep umbilicus (umbilicus), from which the species name derives. Surface smooth, glossy, lacking pronounced ribs or spines. Delicate, regular growth lines are only weakly visible. Coloration: background color light brown, cream, or beige, often with darker, irregular smudges and wavy bands. The interior of the aperture is usually lighter – white, cream, or slightly orange. Outer lip: thin, smooth, unarmed with teeth, slightly flared outward. Special identifying feature: a deep, wide umbilicus on the underside of the shell, clearly visible even in adults. The Melo umbilicatus shell occurs in Indo-Pacific waters, most often on sandy shallow coastal bottoms. Due to its impressive size and decorative appearance it is often collected, and in some regions also used in artistic crafts. Dimensions - 105/140/230mm. Highly recommended for collectors and interior decorators.
