Scuola napoletana (XVII) - Ecce Homo e Mater Dolorosa

Important Pair of Copper Paintings with Frames in Gilt Bronze, Chased – Neapolitan School of the 17th Century This fascinating and rare pair of oil paintings on copper, conceived as pendants, depicts Ecce Homo and Mater Dolorosa, two of the most intense and moving images of the devotional Baroque tradition. The works are housed within their magnificent contemporaneous frames in bronze, entirely worked and chased by hand with a splendid gilding that preserves a magnificent patina of time. The prestigious provenance from the furnishings of an illustrious Neapolitan noble residence testifies to their high historical value and confirms an aristocratic commission of exceptional standing. The choice of oil on copper as the painting support was, in the 17th century, the prerogative of works destined for elite private collections and domestic altars. The smooth metal surface allowed painters a meticulous, almost enamel-like application of colour, capable of giving an extraordinary sheen and chromatic transparency that have been splendidly preserved to date, as demonstrated by the details of these two branches. Stylistically and formally, the paintings fit superbly into the Neapolitan School of the second half of the 17th century, precisely in that classicist and purist strand that blended the truth of feeling with a formal grace of Emilia-inspired elegance. This artistic tendency counted among its leading exponents masters such as Massimo Stanzione and, especially, Andrea Vaccaro, an extraordinarily renowned painter for the production of half-figure sacred subjects destined for the nobility of the Viceroyalty. In Ecce Homo, Christ is depicted in a moment of silent and noble pathos, where the composed features of the resigned face, the crown of thorns finely sketched, and the soft chiaroscuro rendering of the anatomy recall the most fortunate models of Vaccaro’s circle. In Mater Dolorosa, the Virgin Mary is shown with hands joined in prayer and the heart pierced by the sword, in full accordance with the iconography of Simeon’s prophecy; the idealized face is scored by transparent tears painted with extraordinary realism that heightens the intense spirituality of the work. Of exceptional collectible value are the splendid oval frames in bronze, measuring a total of 23x16x2 cm with a weight of 370 g each. The rich Baroque decoration of asymmetric volutes, beaded elements, and shell motifs testifies to the very high level of the foundries and bronze workers active in Naples in the 17th century. The backs of the metals, preserved with their original era fasteners, reveal the ancient craftsmanship and the authenticity of a art pairing that has reached us miraculously intact. This pair of pendants represents a secure investment and a piece of absolute excellence for the most demanding collectors of high antiquity and sacred art.
