Flemish School (18th-19th century) “ Portrait of Pieter Paul Rubens ” Oil on canvas / 1780-1800 Signed at bottom left Flemish School, late 18th century Oil on canvas The painting depicts the famous Flemish master in half-length, following a consolidated iconography derived from self-portraits and images disseminated through engravings between the 17th and 18th centuries. Rubens is shown facing the viewer, with a slight turn of the head and a direct gaze, animated by a lively and subtly ironic expression. The painter wears the wide black hat with a broad brim, a distinctive element of his public image, under which his long wavy hair is glimpsed. The thin curled mustache and the pointed goatee frame the face, rendered with warm tones and soft chiaroscuro transitions. Around the neck opens a white pleated ruff with lace border, treated with luminous finesse and decorative taste. The work fits into the cultural climate of the late 18th-century Flemish period, a time when the figure of Rubens is rediscovered and celebrated as an emblem of the great national artistic tradition. In this context celebratory portraits, copies and reinterpretations proliferate, which, while recalling 17th-century models, present a smoother painting sensibility and a more uniform light, distant from the vibrant Baroque energy of the original. The dark neutral background isolates the figure, enhancing its psychological presence, while the brushwork appears controlled and refined, coherent with late 18th-century taste. The painting thus constitutes a significant testimony to the posthumous fortune of Rubens and to the continuity of Flemish artistic memory between Baroque and proto-Romantic culture.
