Scuola di Jacques-Louis David (XIX) - Ritratto di Jean-Francois Champollion

School of Jacques-Louis David Portrait of Jean-François Champollion circa 1820-1830 Oil on canvas 68 x 50 cm The painting depicts a half-length portrait of Jean-François Champollion (Figeac, 1790 – Paris, 1832), celebrated French Orientalist and Egyptologist to whom the deciphering of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic system is owed, announced in 1822 with the publication of the Letter to M. Dacier. A central figure in French intellectual life during the Restoration, Champollion held the post of keeper of Egyptian antiquities at the Louvre Museum from 1826 and took part, between 1828 and 1829, in the Franco-Tuscan expedition to Egypt. The subject wears a dark elegant tailcoat, a waistcoat in yellow-ochre tones, and a white shirt with an high collar, around which a broad black tie is knotted. His short, dark hair frames a face with pronounced features, characterized by a piercing gaze and a thoughtful expression. The figure emerges from a brown, almost uniform background, on which the luminous modeling of the face stands out. The work appears to be linked to the neoclassical figurative culture developed in France in the late eighteenth century and the first three decades of the next century, under the decisive influence of Jacques-Louis David. The portrait production of the French master, marked by strict drawing control, the plastic definition of volumes, and a particular attention to the psychological investigation of the effigies, exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations, contributing to the formation of a language destined to characterize French portraiture of the Napoleonic era and the Restoration. In the present work, the close-up arrangement of the figure, the sobriety of the background, and the concentration of illumination on the face seem to respond to the principles of compositional essentiality of the Davidian tradition. The light, coming from the left, hits the forehead, the nose, and the cheek of the subject, defining the features through relatively sharp chiaroscuro transitions. Particularly significant is the construction of the gaze, which gives the character an intense psychological presence, while the description of the clothing, entrusted to a restrained color palette, helps to underline the austere character of the presentation. The painting technique finds some points of comparison in early 19th-century French portraiture, especially in the works of François Gérard (1770-1837) and Robert-Jacques Lefèvre (1755-1830), artists who interpreted the Davidian heritage through an increasing attention to the individual characterization of the subjects. The definition of the facial volumes, the pose of the figure, and the careful rendering of clothing elements suggest a possible placement of the painting within this figurative culture.
