Southern German Master - 15th Century “Four Saints” – two-sided panel-altarpiece element Second half of the 15th century, ca. 1450–1480 - Work from an important museum collection Tempera and mixed media on panel, with worked gold background Panel painted on both faces, divided into four figurative fields The work constitutes a rare and evocative surviving element of a late Gothic devotional complex in the Germanic area, presumably originally belonging to a portefeuilles altarpiece (Flügelaltar). The peculiarity of the artifact lies in the presence of painted decoration on both sides of the panel, for a total of four sacred depictions, conceived to be alternately visible in the different configurations of the altar. On the side characterized by the precious incised and punch-work gold grounds appear two full-length saints, set within spaces marked by chessboard perspective pavements. The richness of the gilding, the pronounced contours of the features, the elongated construction of the figures and the strongly linear rendering of the draperies point back to the late Gothic painting culture of southern Germany. On the reverse, the iconographic reading becomes particularly interesting. In the upper register is depicted Saint Gregory the Great, identified by the inscription and the pontifical dignity. The saint is accompanied by the nimbated eagle of Saint John the Evangelist, whose name explicitly appears on the scroll. In the lower register stands Saint Augustine of Hippo, depicted in episcopal vestments. At his feet is the nimbated ox of Saint Luke the Evangelist, also identified by the inscription painted on the scroll. The association of the Doctors of the Church with the Evangelists belongs to a consolidated medieval iconographic tradition. The presence of the eagle for John and the ox for Luke is perfectly in line with Western symbolism assigning, respectively, man/angel to Matthew, the lion to Mark, the ox to Luke and the eagle to John. Historical-artistic frame The ensemble shows characteristics fully attributable to the late Gothic Germanic culture of the 15th century: sacred frontal facing, strong linearity, faces carved by incisive line work, deep color, inscriptions in Gothic characters and particular attention to symbolic elements. Even more significant is the contrast between the two faces: on one side the almost abstract preciousness of the ornamental gold grounds, on the other a more narrative representation of the Doctors of the Church engaged in the study of the Scriptures. The panel should not be considered a simple devotional painting in isolation, but as part of a more complex iconographic program. The original presence of other elements of the complex could have completed the series of the four Doctors of the Church and the four Evangelists. This remains a reconstructive hypothesis, but it would be perfectly coherent with the preserved program: Gregory–John and Augustine–Luke indeed constitute two pairs belonging to two iconographic tetrads frequently associated in the Middle Ages. HISTORICAL INTEREST: - The work’s interest lies not only in its antiquity and the quality of the gold grounds, but above all in the survival of the painted decoration on both faces, in the preservation of Gothic inscriptions and iconographic attributes, and in the possibility of reconstructing its original function within a late medieval altarpiece. The artifact thus possesses significant documentary value for the study of Germanic sacred painting and the structure of 15th-century portelle altars. - On the reverse: Saint Gregory the Great with the eagle of Saint John the Evangelist; Saint Augustine of Hippo with the ox of Saint Luke the Evangelist. Valuation and appraisal: Considering the dating to the second half of the 15th century, the southern Germanic sphere, the presence of worked gold grounds, Gothic inscriptions, and, above all, the particular double-faced structure with four sacred depictions, an indicative market estimate is proposed at present between €7,000.00 and €9,000.00 Frame: The panel preserves a wooden frame of antique manufacture, characterized by a simple and functional structure to the panel’s vertical configuration. On the gold-ground side it features an internal moulding with traces of gilding and a dark finish, while on the other side the wooden structure appears more essential, leaving the two figurative registers fully legible. The frame shows widespread wear, abrasion, small gaps, loss of underdrawing and gilding, holes and traces of previous interventions, elements consistent with the long conservation history of the object. There are also restorations and small protective elements attributable to later interventions. Condition report: The work presents in a discreet state of conservation given its age and nature. The wooden support preserves both painted surfaces, with diffuse traces of natural aging, abrasions, small gaps and wear of the paint film. The gold grounds show wear, scratches, tiny losses and surface alterations, though the richly incised and punched decoration remains legible to a large extent. The figures and Gothic inscriptions are overall well recognizable; there are localized losses of color and possible retouches or later conservation interventions. The wooden frame shows wear, gaps in the preparation and gilding, abrasions, small holes and traces of previous interventions, yet not compromising the overall legibility of the artifact. Given the fourteenth-century date and the particular bifacial nature of the work, the conservation state can be regarded as overall satisfactory. - Expertise and certificate of lawful provenance - Text and documentation prepared by an antique expert The frame is provided gratis with the work and must be considered an accessory element, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Due to the natural fragility of old and gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of frame parts that occur during transport or shipment cannot be subject to refund, compensation or dispute relating to the painting’s value. The packaging will nonetheless be prepared with maximum care to ensure, as far as possible, safe transport.
