Sculpture

Distinctive and very finely crafted Guatemalan Maya mask in the tradition of the famous jadeite masks from Tikal. The mask is composed of individual, carefully fitting green jadeite segments, combined with red stone accents around the mouth, headdress, and decorative elements. The inlaid eyes and the highly stylized headdress give the mask a powerful presence that clearly references classic Maya iconography. High-quality Guatemalan studio piece. On the back there is the handwritten name “José,” the maker or the studio. In addition, there is the code “28-5-208.” This appears to be an atelier, production, or inventory number. The mask sits on a sturdy soapstone pedestal with a metal pin and is in very good condition.
