Sculpture, Madonna Addolorata Napoletana - 38 cm - Terracotta, Wood

Madonna of Sorrows – Neapolitan Manufacture, early 19th century – Polychrome terracotta, glass eyes and silk garments Splendid and refined devotional sculpture depicting the Madonna of Sorrows, attributable to the Neapolitan manufacture of the early 19th century, a valuable testimony to the great artistic and religious Neapolitan tradition. The work stands out for the extraordinary delicacy of the face, realized in polychrome terracotta and enriched with glass eyes, capable of giving the gaze a depth and expressive intensity particularly evocative. The delicate flesh tone, the slightly rosy cheeks, and the melancholic expression faithfully convey the composed sorrow of the Virgin, revealing a notable attention to the rendering of anatomical and psychological details. The figure wears an elegant black silk gown, richly decorated with passementerie, fringes and refined ornaments in gold filaments. The mantle, also adorned with elaborate ornamental finishes, wraps the figure harmoniously, granting it a solemn and scenographic appearance. Particularly charming are the delicate lace trimmings framing the neck and wrists, evidence of the care dedicated to the creation of ancient devotional garments. On the head sits an elaborate crown in silvered metal, worked with perforated ornamental motifs and topped by a small cross. The folded hands hold a symbolic dagger, likewise in silvered metal, an iconic reference to Simeon’s prophecy and to the Virgin’s pain, whose heart would have been pierced by a sword. The sculpture presents the characteristic construction of old vestmented statues of the Neapolitan tradition, with anatomically modeled and polychromed elements, lower limbs partially hidden by the clothing, and small feet wearing sandals. The entire figure rests on an elegant octagonal base in gilded wood, gold leaf, characterized by refined architectural molding that gives even more importance and dynamism to the composition. Of particular interest is the perfect balance between the delicate expressiveness of the face, the opulence of the ornaments, and the solemnity of the overall effect. A work of notable charm, representative of the artistic sensitivity and the profound devotion that characterized Neapolitan sacred production in the early 19th century. Period: early 19th century. Provenance: Neapolitan manufacture, Italy. Materials: polychrome terracotta, glass eyes, silk, passementerie and gold threads, silvered metal and gilded wood. Dimensions: overall height 38 cm, width about 20 cm. Condition: the work is in excellent overall condition, considering its age and the delicacy of the materials. Natural traces of time are evident and there is a circumscribed area of wear and fabric deterioration at the lower part of the dress, clearly documented in the photographs. This peculiarity does not compromise the visual harmony nor the overall charm of the artifact, which retains its extraordinary stage presence and the authentic character of an ancient devotional object. Interior styling suggestions: thanks to its refined elegance and extraordinary expressive intensity, this Madonna of Sorrows represents a decorative element of great personality, capable of imparting charm, history, and spirituality to spaces. Particularly suitable for placement on an antique console, inside a display cabinet for a collection, or on a small pedestal, it finds an ideal location in historic homes, private libraries, professional offices, and classical or eclectic interiors. It also makes a striking addition to a contemporary interior, where the contrast between ancient devotional art and minimalist furnishings can create a particularly sophisticated aesthetic dialogue. A warm, discreet light, preferably indirect and away from textiles, will enhance the delicacy of the face, the reflections of the crown, and the precious gilded decorations of the gown. An authentic testament to Neapolitan devotional tradition, especially interesting for sacred art collectors, lovers of ancient sculpture, and enthusiasts of objects capable of telling the history, art, and sensibility of a bygone era. The photographs are an integral part of the description and faithfully document the characteristics, details, and conservation status of the work.
