Crouching Venus in the bath – Alabaster sculpture – 19th century – Neoclassical taste and Grand Tour Elegant alabaster sculpture from the 19th century, depicting Venus (Aphrodite) crouching during bathing, inspired by the famous Hellenistic model traditionally attributed to the Greek sculptor Doidalsas of Bithynia, active in the 3rd century BC. The composition takes up one of the most fascinating subjects of classical statuary: the goddess of beauty caught in a moment of intimacy, with the body gathered, the head delicately inclined, and a small vessel at her feet, an element that recalls the ritual of the bath. Particularly refined are the anatomical modeling, the elegant torsion of the bust, the softness of the forms, and the gathered hairstyle, worked with careful attention to detail. The piece features a splendid antique patina with warm ivory tones, with delicate natural nuances that enhance the depth and plasticity of the alabaster. The sculpture sits within the tradition of reproductions of classical subjects especially appreciated during the Grand Tour, testimony to the renewed nineteenth-century interest in Greek and Roman art. Of notable substance and weight, it rests on a geometric alabaster base, equipped on the underside with protective felt. Dimensions: 23 × 11 × 12 cm. Conditions: good state of conservation, with natural patina of time and a small loss to some phalanges of the fingers of the right hand, which does not compromise the visual harmony of the composition. Interior design tips: a refined complement for classic interiors, antique libraries, professional studies, and contemporary interiors. Ideal on a console or beside art volumes, where the whiteness of the alabaster and the elegance of the forms can be particularly enhanced. The photographs constitute an integral part of the description.
