Vintage sewing cushion / storage box – black & cream faux leather – removable sewing compartment – 1960s A particularly decorative and practical vintage sewing and storage piece from the Mid-Century period. The round, nearly globe-like cream form with a wide black band gives this sewing block a distinctly 1960s look. Under the removable, softly padded lid there is surprisingly ample storage space. At the top lies a removable round insert with a cross-shaped compartment arrangement, originally intended to keep yarn, pins, buttons and other sewing notions neatly organized. After removing this insert, a larger storage compartment becomes available underneath. This type of furniture was in the sixties used as a sewing box, storage unit and seat/footstool. Similar Dutch examples from that period are described as round sewing stools with faux leather upholstery, a removable inner tray and extra storage space underneath. The multifunctional character – sewing box and piece of furniture – is typical of compact Mid-Century domestic furniture from this period. The combination of black and cream, the rounded shape and the fully upholstered exterior also make this piece an attractive decorative object, even today when used for wool, craft, magazines or other small items. No manufacturer’s mark was found, so the piece cannot be attributed to a specific designer or maker. The original legs are no longer present and are not included. The sewing cushion currently sits directly on the bottom, with a few felt pads attached for protection. This is clearly shown in the photos and should be taken into account when assessing the piece. Condition Vintage used condition with normal signs of age and wear. The upholstery shows local light soiling, discoloration, small scratches and wear. Also inside and on the removable insert there are signs of use and age. At the bottom there are the four holes for the missing legs mentioned earlier. The construction, lid and removable partition are present. User wear as seen in the photos.
