The Sarrebourg beers: Printer Andreis S.A. Marseille The Sarrebourg Brewery: a 150-year history The brewery was located in the heart of Sarrebourg, at the corner of Gambetta and Erckmann-Chatrian streets. Its history begins in 1820, when it was created by the Antoni family under the name Brasserie du Dauphin. At that time, Sarrebourg had several small breweries. 1896: industrial development In 1896, during the period when Alsace-Lorraine was annexed by the German Empire, the brewery was acquired by two German industrialists. It then took the name Gebrüder Lutz-Lutzbrau. The brewery was significantly enlarged and modernized. At the beginning of the 20th century, it already produced about 20,000 hectoliters of beer per year and employed around twenty people. In 1905, it became a local-law joint-stock company under the name Saarburger Brauerei Gebrüder Lutz. 1924: the “Brasserie de Sarrebourg” After the return of the Moselle to France, the company came under French control. On March 6, 1924, it officially became the Brasserie de Sarrebourg, French joint-stock company. This was a period of strong expansion: around 1928, production reached about 60,000 hectoliters per year, with around 70 employees. Before World War II, the brewery even had warehouses and commercial networks in different regions of France. 1940–1945: a new German period In June 1940, after the second annexation of the Moselle, the brewery took back an German name: Saarburger Brauerei AG. Its beers were then marketed notably under the name Saarburger Pilsner. After Liberation, the company resumed its French name of Brasserie de Sarrebourg. The Sarrebourg beers The brewery produced several brands. Among the best known: * Sarpils — the beer that appears on your plaque * Sarbock * Sarbräu * Sarrator * Sarlor * Spéciale * Extra Brune * Jador, notably for lemonades and sodas. The Sarbock, a relatively light beer of about 3°, was intended for the workers in the mining and steel basins of Lorraine. Sarpils would later become one of the emblematic brands of the brewery. 1967–1970: the end At the end of 1967, the Sarrebourg Brewery merged with the Brasserie de l’Espérance in Schiltigheim. The situation of the Sarrebourg establishment then deteriorated gradually and production eventually ceased. The brewery closed definitively in 1970, after about 150 years of activity.
