Santana and Adam Martinez (Native Americans, 1909-2002/1903-2000)San

San Ildefonso Pueblo earthenware jar in a matte-on-polished blackware finish. The bulbous-bodied vessel features a short, wide neck and a slightly flared rim. The exterior is decorated with a traditional Avanyu (water serpent) motif rendered in a matte slip against a highly polished, mirror-like surface. The serpent design includes a triangular head with an open mouth and teeth, transitioning into a flowing body that encircles the jar, interspersed with geometric cloud and feather elements. The recessed, unpolished base is incised with the script signature Santana Adam. Santana Martinez and her husband Adam Martinez were prominent San Ildefonso potters who continued the black-on-black tradition established by Adam's mother, Maria Martinez. Dimensions: 6"W x 5.5"H Weight: 1.66 lbs Condition Request Condition Report Good.
