Tutte le aste / Monete & Banconote / Santa Barbara, California. $5 1873. Fr. 1139. First National Gold

Santa Barbara, California. $5 1873. Fr. 1139. First National Gold Bank. Charter #2104. PMG Fine 12. A well-circulated note in technical terms, but alas a relic of an epoch where paper money was originally met with skepticism by segments of the population. This $5 National Gold Bank Note issued by the First National Gold Bank of Santa Barbara (Charter# 2104) during the early 1870s offers much despite the numerical grade assigned by PMG. Here bidders are met with honest originality exemplified by plain detail brought to form by the vignettes entitled Columbus in Sight of Land and America Presented to the Old World which dutifully complement the penned signatures of Cashier Amasa L. Lincoln and President Mortimer Cook who served concurrently between 1873 and 1875. Yet perhaps most importantly is the proverbial "keystone" of this type regardless of denomination which is seen here in detail despite signs of prolonged circulation. The all-important vignette of Pre-33 gold coins seen on the back bears testament to circulation, but not to the point where individual details are lost to countless folds and internal issues making this a note bound to meet the desires of a collector who has long sought to add a fine example of this storied type to their holdings without sacrificing quality and eye appeal merely for the sake of thrift. PMG comments "Minor Rust." Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
