Samuel & Son, a London-based firm documented from the 19th century, specialised in the manufacture of key-winding and keyless watches, as well as the importation of Geneva-made timepieces. From 1897, the firm is listed as a watch manufacturer at 94 Hatton Garden, London. The firm retailed watches by Nicole, Nielsen & Co., a prestigious London watchmaking house founded in 1839 by the Swiss watchmakers Adolphe Nicole and Jules Capt. Following the arrival of the Danish-born watchmaker Sophus Emil Nielsen in 1876, the company gained an international reputation for its highly complicated watches, particularly its specially designed tourbillon timepieces, as well as perpetual calendars, split-seconds chronographs and minute repeaters.
