Salvador Dalí — Castell de Quermançó Print belonging to the set of illustrations produced by Salvador Dalí for Obres de Museu, the great bibliophile work created together with the writer Josep Pla and published around 1980-1981. Dalí produced twenty-two compositions for the project, inspired mainly by landscapes, characters, and places from the Empordà. In this composition, Dalí portrays the Empordà landscape dominated by the ruins of Quermançó Castle, integrating it into a surreal scene. Above the landscape appears a huge reclining human figure that seems to merge with the mountains and rocky formations. The treatment is fundamentally linear, with black ink and strong contrasts, leaving large areas of the paper unworked and using quick strokes to construct both the anatomy and the landscape. The Castle of Quermançó held a special significance for Dalí. He visited the place and grew interested in acquiring it; he even imagined installing there a monumental “Organ of the Tramontana,” powered by the wind. The castle appears in different works by Dalí and is also linked to the legend of the Golden Goat of Quermançó.
